Position Summary:

 

This position provides support to the school nurses and health care services to students.  The Health Assistant reports to a school nurse and is supervised by the Director of Special Education.

 

Primary Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

  • Administers medication and treatment under the direction of a registered school nurse.
  • Assists the district nurses with following OSPI/DOH/L&I/CDC and district guidelines, protocols, policies, and procedures.
  • Assist with daily health screenings
  • Assists the school nurses with clerical duties including: correspondence, routing medical and other records, data entry, immunization monitoring, photocopying, materials and information distribution, and routine (e.g. expiring medications, screening follow-up) parent and family contacts.
  • Prepares and maintains other required records.
  • Monitor the level of basic first aid supplies in all the buildings and coordinate with the school nurses to order supplies as needed.
  • Administers medication and other health-related services that can be delegated to non-medical personnel. Must be willing to tube-feed and catheterize students after training if needed.
  • Assists in programming for the care of students with health impairments and other disabilities.
  • Cooperates with school personnel in identifying and meeting social, emotional, and physical needs of school children.
  • Assists staff to follow the proper procedures for basic first aid for students and staff, administration of medications, and maintenance of health records for students.
  • Assists with screenings required by statute or administrative code under the direction of the nurses.
  • Counsels students in good health habits/personal hygiene.
  • Assists with tracking the administration of Hepatitis B vaccine.
  • Coordinate general district clinics for staff members and/or students. 
  • May be required to travel between schools. 
  • Attends meetings, activities, and professional development as required.
  • Keeps current on medical training issues, research, and regulations relating to school environment and maintains compliance with regulatory agencies and regulations.
  • Works effectively and cooperatively with administrators, staff, students and parents.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Graduate from a Certified Nursing Assistant Program
  • License from the State of Washington as a Certified Nursing Assistant
  • Up to date on immunization records
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification or willingness to take the classes immediately and maintain current certification in the future
  • Must qualify for and maintain a valid Washington driver’s license
  • Bilingual/Spanish speaking preferred

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of current medical issues, research and regulations relating to school environment and ability to apply knowledge and skills.
  • Current experience in nursing field; experience with handicapped children or public health preferred.
  • Possesses good listening skills; is able to express thoughts clearly in verbal and written communications.
  • Maintains a high level of confidentiality.
  • Has good organizational skills; meets timelines appropriately.
  • Interacts positively with students, families, staff, community and administration.
  • Remains objective, fair, and open-minded.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, reports or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide using whole numbers, fractions and decimals.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as ratio and percentages and interpret graphs.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Knowledge and use of CPR, First Aid and Heimlich maneuver.
  • Respond to and direct others in emergency situations using medical background and district disaster plan.
