Position Summary:

This position will identify and recruit eligible migrant students into the program. Responsible for acting as a liaison between home and school. The Migrant Family Service Worker will coordinate and facilitate the academic and support needs of migrant students with school counselor to successfully transition migrant student to the next grade level, complete high school, and promote the transition to postsecondary education or employment. This position works with all grade levels, Kindergarten through 12th grade.

 

Primary Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Collaborate on the development of parent advisory group and attend monthly parent meetings.
  • Plan, implement and document family-focused home visits with participating families.
  • Assist parents in identifying relevant local agencies, services and other resources.
  • Facilitate effective communication (in both English and Spanish) between migrant students, their families and the schools.
  • Attend trainings as required.
  • Work flexible hours as dictated by needs of migrant students and their families which may include evening activities.
  • Work with the Supervisor and school staff to identify and establish program and student goals in alignment with the district’s local plan and the State Service Delivery Plan.
  • Provide supplemental support and services focused on meeting the unique needs of migrant students.
  • Coordinate services with other resources migrant students may be eligible and entitled to receive.
  • Coordinate with school counselor, teachers, and other appropriate staff to develop a roster of migrant students most at-risk of not meeting state academic and achievement standards.
  • Identify the barriers including educational disruption, cultural and language barriers, social isolation, various health-related problems, or other factors that inhibit the ability of selected migrant students to meet state academic and achievement standards.
  • Work with school counselor and selected students to develop student plans/goals that lead to a successful transition to the next grade level and postsecondary education or employment.
  • Coordinate access to services available through school district and/or community to reduce and/or eliminate identified barriers.
  • Coordinate access to services available through school district and/or community that strengthen communication, self-advocacy, and leadership skills.
  • Facilitate access to school counselor and teaching staff regarding academic needs, including class scheduling to ensure access to required courses for graduation and transition to postsecondary education or employment.
  • Facilitate understanding by student and family of district requirements toward graduation, including High School and Beyond Plan.
  • Work with school counselor to monitor attendance, discipline, credits/grades, and other social/academic issues that may impact the student’s ability to successfully transition to next grade level, graduate, or pursue postsecondary opportunities or employment.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to strengthen skills in working with at-risk migrant students including motivational techniques and reporting requirements.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Required qualifications:

 

Education/Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) required
  • Fluency in Spanish language and/or primary language of migrant population, both spoken and written.
  • Four-year degree, preferably in Social Work, Education, Psychology or Counseling.
  • Minimum of three years’ applicable work experience desired
  • Experience in an educational or community advocacy-related field
  • Experience working with at-risk migrant students and families

Certificates/Licenses:

  • FBI and Washington State Patrol background clearance required.
  • Access to reliable transportation. Valid driver’s license and good driving record required.
  • CPR/First Aid Card.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of economic, social, cultural, and psychological factors influencing migrant students.
  • Experience working with secondary school aged migrant students in an educational setting.
  • Knowledge of school and community resources available to migrant students and families, including technical education, career awareness, and postsecondary education opportunities
  • Computer usage and ability to use internet software, e-mail, word processing software.
  • Maintain a high level of integrity and commitment.

  • Remain open to others’ ideas and contribute to building a positive team spirit.
  • Remain calm and professional in work environment.

  • Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Proficiently use the following programs strongly preferred:  MS Word and Excel.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with parents, staff, students and community.
  • Ability to work flexible hours as assigned, maintains current knowledge in assigned field, and able to organize own time for work completion.
  • Knowledge and understanding of state/federal laws and regulations regarding education and social services.
  • Ability to collect data and set up and maintain accurate filing system.
  • Ability to attend to detail and follow task through to completion.
  • Ability to organize and set priorities.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and be flexible to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Experience working with families with low economic-status.
  • Desired effective characteristics include:  flexibility, enthusiasm, willingness to develop relationships and willingness to learn new skills.
  • Willingness to make home visits.
