PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:

  • Sweeping, mopping, spot cleaning, stripping, refinishing, buffing hard surface flooring (VAT, vinyl, wood, terrazzo, etc.)
  • Vacuuming, spot/stain removal, extraction cleaning of carpeted floors.
  • Cleaning/sanitizing lavatory fixtures/facilities, refilling dispensers, cleaning interior and exterior window surfaces, emptying recycle containers and trash/garbage, dusting interior vertical and horizontal surfaces.
  • Removal of extraneous dirt/markings from interior and exterior vertical/horizontal surfaces (walls, doors, etc.).
  • Follow instructions for safe work practices and chemical use, storage of chemicals, flammables, tools, equipment and associated materials.
  • Make minor repairs and/or report need of building, facility or equipment repair or maintenance through channels, to supervisor.
  • Work and communicate effectively with supervisor, staff, students and public.
  • Operate and program intrusion and fire alarm systems and HVAC systems.  May operate boilers and allied heating equipment.
  • Comply with safety policies and procedures and attend/complete required training.
  • Proper disposal of hazardous waste and body fluids.
  • Use and maintain assigned power equipment and hand tools such as vacuum, broom, mop, squeegee, ladder for cleaning and general maintenance of floors, walls, carpets and furniture.
  • Lock and unlock buildings; secure building when facilities are not in use by checking for unlocked doors and windows; report unauthorized occupants.  Put out and retrieve flag(s).
  • Perform cleaning and related activities within reasonable distance from buildings using hand-operated tools or small power equipment to remove snow or debris, or to sweep sidewalks or stairs.
  • Set-up and take down equipment, such as chalkboards, easels, furnishings, folding chairs, tables, and athletic equipment needed for meetings, classrooms, conferences and events.
  • Such other related duties as may be assigned by the principal or maintenance supervisor or his/her designee.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience:  High school diploma or general education degree (GED).

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of or experience in general care and maintenance of various types of floor surfaces.
  • General knowledge of custodial cleaning techniques. Knowledge of basic custodial tools and equipment and common hand tools.
  • Ability to perform minor maintenance of facilities and equipment, including plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems repair and services.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to cultural, developmental, religious and ethnic diversity of schools and community.
  • Ability to prioritize work.
  • Have ability to communicate with staff, faculty and students with tact and diplomacy thus maintaining a harmonious, cooperative atmosphere.
  • Have ability to communicate both in writing and verbally.
  • Demonstrate flexibility, caring, resourcefulness, respect for others and a sense of humor.
  • Consciously models the values of trust, decency and integrity.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • General math skills.
  • Experience in institutional custodial field or comparable industry setting preferred.
  • Experience with and knowledge of:  intrusion alarms, automatic fire alarm/sprinkler systems, HVAC systems and controls (computer controlled type experience] preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk, use hands and fingers to handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; and talk or hear.  The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms.  The employee is occasionally required to sit.  The employee frequently must squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward.  The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools and climbs on to ladders.  The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job.  The employee may indulge in sustained physical activities relative to assigned duties; do standing work for a six (6) hour period; climb ladders up to 20 feet following L&I safety standards.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as cleaning supplies, pails and unloading trucks.  Occasionally the employee may lift and/or move over 50 pounds such as furniture with assistance.  The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables, bleachers, scrubbing machines, vacuums and buffers for sustained periods of time.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and will occasionally work outdoors.  The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment.  The employee may occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers and sprays.  The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

 

TESTING:

There may be testing for this position.

FBI and Washington State Patrol Background clearance required.
