Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Native Education Administrator, the Native Education Coordinator is responsible for coordination and implementation of the Native Education Grant.  The purpose of the federal grant is to assist Native American students in achieving state academic standards.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education/Experience:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Four-year degree in Social Work, Education, Psychology or Counseling preferred.
• Experience working with diverse cultures preferably local Native American Tribes.

 Certificates/Licenses:

• FBI and Washington State Patrol background clearance required.
• Access to reliable transportation. Valid driver’s license and good driving record required.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Develop and implement an educational and cultural related program that meets the needs of Native American students in order to achieve state academic standards.
• Coordinate the tutorial services in core subject areas for Native American students served in the program.
• Coordinate and implement programs and activities to increase awareness and instill pride of Native American history, traditions and culture.
• Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents and school staff.
• Facilitate effective communication between Native American families and school staff.  Assist school personnel with home-school relationships.
• Assist school staff in understanding cultural and environmental factors which impact Native American students.
• Organize and facilitate parent advisory meetings.
• Attend workshops, conferences and meetings as required.
• Prepare and maintain required documentation and files.
• Collect academic data and submit grant in a timely manner.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

• Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with parents, staff, students and community.
• Ability to work cooperatively and successfully with all staff, students and community.

• Ability to work flexible hours as assigned, maintains current knowledge in assigned field, and able to organize own time for work completion.
• Knowledge and experience working with community social services and resource agencies, particularly local tribal agencies.
• Knowledge and understanding of state/federal laws and regulations regarding education and social services.
• Effective human relations and communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
• Good language, grammar and math skills.
• Computer skills or ability to learn word-processing and spreadsheet programs.
• Ability to collect data and set up and maintain accurate filing system.
• Ability to attend to detail and follow task through to completion.
• Ability to organize and set priorities.
• Ability to work effectively under pressure and be flexible to meet deadlines.
• Maintain a high level of confidentiality.
• Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
• Ability to deal with problems working a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
• Experience working with families with low economic-status.
• Desired effective characteristics include:  flexibility, enthusiasm, willingness to develop relationships and willingness to learn new skills.
• Willingness to make home visits.
